CHINESE RED YEAST RICE: Chinese red yeast rice is a source of mevinolin, a natural phytochemical indistinguishable from the synthetic drug, Lovastatin. Lovastatin has been sold by Merck as the prescription drug Mevacor since 1987. Chinese red yeast rice with mevinolin has been found to reduce cholesterol, triglycerides, and LDL levels by inhibiting the biosynthesis of cholesterol. This benefit goes significantly beyond the management of dietary fats and oils, by providing moderation of the body’s production of cholesterol. In addition, Chinese red yeast rice contains other natural phytochemicals, such as betasitosterol, stigmasterol, isoflavones, and monounsaturated fatty acids, which provide greater cholesterol reducing activity than Lovastatin therapy alone. Chinese red yeast rice is the product of rice on which red yeast (Monascus Purpureus) has been fermented. Its uses include the production of rice wine, as a food preservative for fish and meat, and as a traditional medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine characterizes Chinese red yeast rice as a benign, effective remedy which improves the circulation.

CHROMIUM PICOLINATE: It is a patented version of the trace mineral chromium. Studies show that this dietary supplements benefits include weight loss, lowered serum cholesterol and glucose, burned fat, and built muscle. A double blind, crossover study showed an average of 7% cholesterol reduction in subjects taking chromium picolinate. Chromium can also produce anabolic effects similar to steroids, but without any of the side effects. It not only increases strength and muscle mass, but was also shown to decrease body fat by 22% in one study.

POLICOSANOL: It is a unique natural product derived from sugar cane wax and beeswax: It has proved effective at reducing cholesterol levels and for some individuals may be a reasonable natural alternative to the commonly prescribed "statin-type" cholesterol-lowering drugs. A 2002 analysis in the American Heart Journal reviewed more than 60 clinical trials of sugar cane-derived policosanol that involved more than 3000 patients. The authors concluded that policosanol is "a very promising phytochemical alternative to classic lipid-lowering agents such as statins."

GUGGULIPIDS: It regulates fat metabolism and helps in removing excess cholesterol from the body. Guggul Gugulipid, also known as commiphora mukul and guggulipid, is a very effective herbal medicine for controlling cholesterol and reducing fat build-up.

PHYTOSTEROLS: Plant sterols and plant stanols are collectively known as phytosterols. Plant sterols are plant compounds with chemical structures similar to that of cholesterol. Especially high sterol levels are found in rice bran, wheat germ, corn oils, and soybeans. In a more concentrated form, these substances are called plant stanols. Structurally these compounds are chemically similar to cholesterol. However, unlike cholesterol derived from animal sources--which absorbs easily and raises the body's own cholesterol levels--phytosterols are present only at very low levels in the body because they are difficult to absorb.

EPA: Eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) is one of several omega-3 fatty acids used by the body. The typical Western diet is relatively deficient in omega-3 fatty acids compared to the diets of our ancestors. Our main dietary sources of EPA are cold water fish such as wild salmon. EPA has also been shown to improve cardiovascular health and may prevent the accumulation of plaque (cholesterol and fat) on the walls of the arteries.

ARTICHOKE LEAF EXTRACT: It inhibits cholesterol synthesis by indirect inhibition of the enzyme HMGCoA-reductase. Direct inhibition is the method of the "statin" drugs like Mevacor™. Those drugs have side effects which Artichoke Leaf Extract does not. One study showed an average 11.5% reduction in cholesterol and a 12.5% reduction in triglycerides. HDL showed a tendency to increase. Interestingly, the higher the cholesterol level, the more effective it was. It also inhibits the oxidization of LDL cholesterol.
